So we’re still doing the Martin Freeman/Lucy Liu thing?  I’m just confused as to why people are acting like calling her ‘ugly’—joking or not—is the most venomously horrific insult that could possibly be paid to her.

Oh, wait.  Right.  It’s because she’s a woman, and her physical attractiveness is thus intrinsically tied to her acting talent and fundamental worth as a human being.  If he’d said that about a man, this would’ve ended at, “Don’t be a dick, Martin.”

It’s kind of annoying me, to be honest, because I feel like a lot of the backlash is coming from the shock of, “He called a beautiful woman a dog?”  Which, yes, tasteless much, but mostly I feel like it denies HER dignity as a human being to treat her as though her looks are the be-all and end-all of her reputation.
