There is a race called Man Against Horse, held in Wales every year.  It was started in 1980, when a man overheard two guys arguing in a pub about whether a human or a horse could win over a long enough distance, because while a horse is one of the faster runners in the animal kingdom, it can only run for so long before it begins to overheat and has to slow down.  In 2004, a human won the race for the first time, proving the argument.
