Oh hey, I started watching it too. I’m not a SW fan but got drawn in because I dig Greg Weisman (exec prod, did Gargoyles and Young Justice) who worked on s1. I liked it though I felt like I missed a lot since I don’t really do SW fandom.
Well, that explains a lot about why it’s so awesome.
Honestly there’s not that much you’re missing in terms of fandom. I mean, there’s quite a bit of fanservice, in the form of lines borrowed from the movies, cameos, that kind of thing. But none of that really matters. If you don’t know why it’s bad news when a guy named Tarkin shows up, you quickly learn it the hard way.
To be quite honest, this would be at least as good an entry point into the Star Wars universe as either of the opening movies in the trilogies.
