I think one thing that often confuses the Discourse about redemption arcs is that sometimes “I want this character to be redeemed” means:

  • he’s already so close to good, just look at those noble/heroic things he did, and he was totally manipulated into joining the bad guys, if only he could see that he’s on the wrong side, he totally deserves a second chance!

and then sometimes it means:

  • wow, he is so evil, like seriously 112% evil, look at all those bad things that he did, and it’s hard to imagine what might get him to change, but I think it could make an amazing story.

And, like. You can totally argue about whether either of those sentiments is appropriate for specific characters. But they are not the same thing at all.
