A tip for writers:

Your job is twofold: to tell the story you want to tell, and to do so in a way that communicates it clearly to your intended audience.

Your job is not: to use the words other people want you to use; to use the style other people want you to use; to tell the story other people want you to tell; or even necessarily to use the formalized standards of your chosen language, as long as you can break the rules without confusing your readers.

Unless you’re writing the story for a grade, of course.  Then your job is to make your teacher happy and get a good grade.
