I’m rewatching Daredevil and still being amazed at the cinematography.  But a couple of other things are standing out to me this time too.

Have you ever seen ‘Foley’ listed in the credits of movies?  It’s the part of sound effects that’s basically typical background noise–footsteps, rustling clothes, opening doors, etc.  When it’s done well, it’s specifically supposed to go largely unnoticed.  It’s there because you’d notice if it weren’t there.

Except on Daredevil.  Where things like the sound of rain and the fall of a knife are brought forward the same way you’d focus the camera on the visual element you want to highlight.

Another thing I notice is that the chiaroscuro in this series not only plays up the noir elements and evokes Manhattan at night (which it does so well I can practically smell it).  It also leaves much of the series nearly in silhouette.  Which is basically the same way Matt ‘sees’ the world.
