Asking For It
So York is dead.
No surprise. She called that one years back.
He brought it on himself, frankly. He was always sloppy. Distractable. Even when he’d been second on the leaderboard, it was always jokes and deflection with him, as though he could erase the war going on around him if he could just deny hard enough that it was serious. He never listened when she told him he was too soft, too gullible, and he’d just kept on giving his loyalty to the wrong people. Ping-ponged from one bleeding-heart cause to the next if you only batted your eyelashes at him and told him how much you needed him.
York is dead, and she doesn’t care. It’s been years since she saw him last. He’s the one who betrayed her. And she doesn’t wish she’d kept the stupid lighter.
