Love is universal, but how we do romance varies widely from culture to culture. As a writer, I’ve always thought reading about the various frameworks and psychologies of romance could be very illuminating. This is a good article on the subject, comparing and contrasting modern romantic approaches for the US and Russia. It doesn’t necessarily address how any individual in either culture goes about it, but rather it takes a look at the paradigms the two cultures attempt to impart on their members.

I thought it was pretty interesting, both in terms of how I like to be able to see clearly what my own culture is trying to push into my head, and in terms of things for me to keep in mind when I develop characters and stories.
