prettyarbitrary:

For two years John and Sherlock lived together, and were friends, and John thought that they were partners, that they NEEDED each other.

But Sherlock never really needed him.  John was never his partner.  He was only Sherlock’s favorite audience.

Why would you say someone like this? -sobbing-

Hahahaha.  Because I like making people cry. ^_^

But no, I’m not saying Sherlock doesn’t CARE about John.  I’m just saying he thinks of John as an accessory to his own life.

In the grand narrative of Sherlock’s life (that exists in his own head), John is the heroine of his tale, in the classic ‘gets kidnapped and then awarded to the hero’ sense.

He’s coming back, all full of amazing stories with which he anticipates winning John’s admiration and joy.  And it’s going to be a real shock to his system when it turns out that John’s got a life that runs on a completely independent narrative from Sherlock’s and continues moving when Sherlock isn’t in the picture.
