Lestrade/John Hunger Games AU?

“They starve us,” John says as he nocks an arrow, “so that we’re too busy surviving to fight.”

“Pretty effective tactic,” Greg replies.  “Sure keeps me busy.”  

The arrow thuds home in the heart of the target.  Greg jumps when John rounds on him with an odd light in his eyes.  ”Have you ever thought about volunteering?”

“For…for the Games?”  Greg’s eyes widen.  “Are you barking?  Why would anybody volunteer?”

John grins at him.  ”Because fighting to live is better than surviving.”
