Man, who DOESN’T suck at summaries? (Well, a few people, who should probably consider making a living off Twitter.)
Writing a fic is one talent. Writing ABOUT a fic is a whole different kettle of fish. Especially writing about YOUR fic. Concisely. While telling people what they need to know in order to know whether it’s worth their time without giving away the things you want them to discover while reading.
Just because you’re good at writing essay papers doesn’t make you good at cover letters.
On the other hand, WRITING “I suck at summaries” in your summary is basically another way of saying, “Fuck it, I’m not even going to bother trying.” And you can see how that lack of inclination to persist doesn’t bode well for your approach to a longer work, which almost by definition would’ve required more effort.
Again, no matter how tempting it is, you don’t include, “I’m sorry about this cover letter, I’m terrible at writing them” in your cover letter.
Or if you do, it may explain why you’ve been having trouble landing a job.
