But honestly, why do writers think folks want unnecessary drama involved in their otps? Especially if they are together? I don’t want inside drama. I want them to conquer exterior drama together while communicating well.
Because sometimes people like reading about characters overcoming enormous tumult and pain to be together. Especially when that pain is internalized, for example mental illness or trauma.
A lot of readers, especially younger ones, have been or currently are in
a place where they’re struggling to get a handle on their issues, and
they’re afraid that their problems will undermine their attempts at
relationships. They feel afraid that they’ll never find someone willing
to wade through their crap to love them for who they are underneath.
And so they like stories that are about someone doing just that.
Sure, in fanfic it’s often exaggerated to the point of caricature, but fanfic isn’t always about clever writing and spot-on characterization and high-quality publication-worthy stories. Sometimes it’s about wallowing in tropes that comfort you, like reading about a couple you are rooting for managing to overcome and get together despite all the over-the-top stupid self-sabotaging crap they throw in their own way.
