The needle sizzles through Ira’s skin, thread dragging after in a drawn-out stinging tug. It feels like tiny fingernails clawing along the underside of his skin, painful but also something else. Something creeping and quiet and invasive.
But it’s his sister doing the invading. Piper who’s guiding the needle through his skin where she sits astraddle his back, embroidering her art across the canvas of his shoulder blade. Her intrusions are always welcome. It’s a lonely world, and the closeness feels good. Reassuring.
His shoulder is starting to feel like it’s on fire. They’ll have to stop for a while soon. She heals each little wound as she goes, but after dozens of little piercings, his skin is aggravated and angry as hell.
Piper’s awareness slides through his skin along with her needle, keeping him company. It’s not his pain they meet at. It’s a simpler, deeper awareness, the same awareness he has of the presence of his own body. She knows his skin the same as he knows it; how deep she’s digging into it, how tight she’s pulling, where her needle is sinking in and coming out again. He basks in their closeness as, loop by loop, she stitches them together.
